Coming
from the Greek Publishers Periscopio Publications, who have
previously published the Model Expert and Air Power Modelling
series, this is the first in what promises to be an excellent series
of aviation reference monographs.
Under the overall series
title Photo Gallery and Profiles is F-104 Starfighter.
This book by Alexandros
Anestis and George Papadimitriou takes an in-depth look at all
variants of the F-104, but primarily focuses on the successful
F-104G. The book includes a brief history of the type and a country
by country summary of the type in service, with many colour photos
in the colours of each user. This is very interesting as it
highlights the many varied users of the F-104 ranging from the US to
NATO countries and smaller countries such as Jordan. The section
serves to highlight the extensive trade in second hand Starfighters
as the type left the service of Germany and other NATO users and
passed in large numbers to operators such as Greece and Turkey.
The real meat of the volume
is however the detailed walk-around style photos of preserved
airframes including some from the Hellenic Air Force Museum. Broken
logically into forward and rear fuselage, undercarriage, wings and
armament, this section covers 33 of the 64 pages and the majority of
the 170 full colour photos in the book. Wrapping up the volume are
27 side and four view profiles illustrating some of the many schemes
worn by the F-104. Overall Photo Gallery: F-104 Starfighter looks to
be a very useful publication for modellers. Certainly there is more
than enough to allow super-detailers to go to town on any of the
many kits of the F-104 available.
Recommended.
